Herd dynamics, production and marketing constraints in the commercialization of cattle across Nguni Cattle Project beneficiaries in Eastern Cape, South Africa

Abstract This paper examines the challenges restricting commercialization of cattle across Nguni Cattle Project beneficiaries in South Africa. Data were collected from one hundred and twenty (120) using a structured questionnaire six district municipalities Eastern Cape Province. Results revealed that majority males, above 60 years old, have received formal training livestock farming. Most reared with other species, 45% owned non-descript breeds, 33% 22% breeds such as Bonsmara Brahman. About 79.2% practised continuous grazing while 52.5% give their supplements, most commonly (48%) rivers source water. (38.4%) reported diseases main production constraints, followed by stock theft (27.5%) feed shortages (22.5%). Furthermore, results showed 80.8% market to 10 per year, 64.8% adult (2+ old) 35.2% weaners (8 months 1 year). (78.7%) used private marketing channels sell animals, 4.3% abattoirs. Factors identified constraints included low numbers (41.7%), inability meet standards (25%) inadequate government support. There was strong association between attributes well constraints. In conclusion, more emphasis should be given improve through provision cattle, trainings services communal farmers.
